The Namibian Police have confirmed that no internal investigation or inquiry was conducted against two officers accused of involvement in the 2023 death of 31-year-old Elliste Plaaitjie in Keetmanshoop.
||Kharas Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Nicodemus Mbango, told NBC News that officers Bernard Mulisa and Wilbard Neshuku have been transferred to other regions.
“No departmental charges were instituted pending the outcome of the criminal case. The only action taken was to transfer them, one to Erongo and the other to Oshikoto,” said Mbango.
Plaaitjie died in a Windhoek hospital a week after he was allegedly assaulted by members of the Namibian Police’s Special Reserve Force. Authorities reported finding a small quantity of cannabis on him.
His murder case was provisionally withdrawn by a magistrate in Keetmanshoop after police had not finalised their investigations; the investigation has since been completed.
Mbango said the police handed the docket to the Office of the Prosecutor General in February. He added that the Prosecutor General’s office has not yet decided whether to prosecute.
Attempts by NBC News to obtain a response from Prosecutor General Martha Imalwa were unsuccessful. Text messages sent to the Ministry of Justice spokesperson have also gone unanswered.
