The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on International Relations, Defence and Security, James Uerikua, said the committee had a successful week-long working visit to the Zambezi Region.
While there, the committee conducted training on protocol and articulated a focus on the behaviour of the Members of Parliament as well as security issues.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee visited the border between Namibia and Zambia earlier, where it was discovered that in some areas, there is encroachment of Zambian infrastructure into the borders of Namibia.
The committee is happy that about 540 hectares of land allocated to Namibian Correctional Services out of 800 hectares is under production and will be put under pivot system irrigation.
Production is expected to reach between six and seven hundred dollars per annum as profit.
The Committee visited Impalila Island to familiarise itself with the situation at the naval base, the police station and the conditions in which they operate.
The Committee said there is economic potential in Impalila, but it is not used by Namibians.
"When you are on the Botswana side, you see that whole coastline full of economic activities and big lodges. Activities are happening all over, you can see, but when you come to the Namibian side, it is exactly five per cent of what you have seen on the other side. No serious economic activities are happening here, and I am informed that there are two lodges lying up somewhere here, and importantly, the lodges are not even owned by Namibian nationals. Those are issues we need to look into."
