Leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), Dr. Panduleni Itula, has said the party will not tolerate any violation of the Namibian Constitution.

The IPC leader was speaking at an event where Erongo candidates for Wednesday's Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections were introduced to the public at Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay.

Among the candidates are current Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes, who will contest the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency; Johannes Tjali for Walvis Bay Rural; and current Swakopmund Constituency Councillor Louisa Kativa for the Swakopmund Constituency.

Dr. Itula described the candidates as leaders who have proven themselves over the years.

"The Erongo Regional Council, under the leadership of the IPC, is the only region in Namibia that achieved 87% of its responsibilities. Where is Patriot Kativa? The Iron Lady of Erongo. Come over here. Because of the leadership we have, Erongo achieved 87%. And the next region is Oshana, with Khomas as number three. So Erongo has done more under IPC."

Dr. Itula added that the IPC is a real opposition party that will not tolerate violations of the Constitution and will continue to scrutinise and hold the government accountable.

"There will be no laws in that Parliament that will be passed as long as the IPC is the official opposition in the Republic. What is the job of the official opposition? There is a need for scrutiny. Because our Constitution, Article 41, says that ministers shall be accountable to Parliament. We are not going to have tissue-paper bills brought in today and passed tomorrow; that is not going to happen. If your ministers are inappropriately appointed and cannot properly scrutinise their bills before they come to Parliament, Parliament is not going to be a rubber stamp, not as long as IPC is there."

While calling on voters to choose the IPC candidates, Dr. Itula emphasised that IPC is a serious party contesting in most of the constituencies where the ruling party is also competing.
