In the small settlement of Aus in the ǁKaras Region, residents continue to face challenges despite having lived there for many years.

Johannes Frederick and Stephanus Hanse highlighted pressing issues affecting their community. Both have resided in Aus for years yet still struggle to secure their own land.

Residents pointed out the lack of proper sanitation facilities and waste disposal skip containers. Unemployment remains a major concern, particularly for Grade 12 learners facing limited opportunities and insufficient funds for further studies.

Community members also noted that meetings with local leaders occur infrequently, leaving many feeling excluded from decision-making.

"I rent a house without a toilet, so I have to pay to use toilet facilities elsewhere. Although I always vote, I have never received government assistance like the harambee. I've been seeking a plot, but I was told I can't get one because I work for TransNamib, despite living in Aus for 21 years. The only visible development is the road construction, but they don't hire locals from Aus; they bring in their own people. Sometimes older men secure contracts, but there are no opportunities for the youth. We want land plots and jobs for the young people here," said Hanse.

Frederick said, "The challenges we face here include a lack of unity among the people; we face serious water shortages and land shortages; some people have no electricity or toilets; and there is an inconsistent water supply. Despite raising these concerns with the councillor, no solutions have been implemented. We hope for development, but without it, we feel powerless. Even those who seek our votes often fail to take action afterwards."
