The festive season is here, and the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) called on road users to avert the scourge on roads by acting responsibly.

From the start of the year until the 26th of November 2025, the Fund recorded 2,960 road crashes compared to 2,822 recorded in the same period last year.

With the alarming numbers and the festive season in motion, the MVA Fund will commence with the festive season awareness road safety campaign, which will end on the 16 January 2026.

Stakeholders have raised over N$1.7 million towards road safety, equipping the law enforcement with all that they need to carry out their duties effectively.

MVA Fund's Chief Operations Officer, Phillip Nghifitikeko, highlighted that men are still top in road accident involvement and fatalities.

"The fatalities have increased by 19%, so during 2024 we recorded 376, whereas this year we are at 448 in 2025, unfortunately. Men continue to lead in both injuries and fatalities during this period; 109 women lost their lives compared to 338 men. While 1,718 women were injured, compared to 3,100 men. I am sure you will agree with me here that these figures are alarming and change is just not necessary; it's urgent."

NamPol's Public Safety and Operational Coordinator, Petrus Swarts, applauded the sponsors for supporting the road safety campaign.

Commissioner Swarts stated that police officers will be visible at all accident-prone spots along the national road during the festive season.

"What we are intending to do is we will pull traffic officers just to ensure visibility. We will pull them. We will allow them and place them in the specific areas where they are accident-prone, and in those areas is where we replace them, in addition to the manpower that is there already. That is what we are looking out for."
