Some Batswana of Namibian descent have welcomed the progress made in the negotiations between the government and its German counterpart.

In her State of the Nation Address, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said a conclusion to the negotiations is now within reach and could possibly be finalised before the year's end.

The announcement by the president has been widely acknowledged in the country and beyond.

Member of Parliament for Maun West in the northwestern part of Botswana, Caterpillar Hikuama acknowledged the progress made so far.

" I acknowledge, the recent progress toward a resolution. The Genocide didn't stop at the Namibian border, and neither should the apology and reparations. As Ovambanderu, Ovaherero, and Nama descendants in Botswana, we are a living witness to the displacement caused by German colonial atrocities," he said.

Hikuama is a citizen of Botswana of Namibian descent and a member of the Ovambanderu tribe who fled the German genocide between 1904 and 1908 alongside the Ovaherero and Nama people.

The joint declaration has been reviewed and will be tabled before parliament prior to signing.
