President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah today received a delegation from the Namibia National Olympic Committee and Namibia Commonwealth Games Association, led by NNOC-CGA President Dr Ndeuliipula Hamutumwa and Vice President Gaby Ahrens.
The engagement, also attended by the NNOC CEO and Dr Sanet Steenkamp, Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, reflected on the successful hosting of the ANOCA Zone VI General Assembly, which was graced by the President of ANOCA, Honourable Mustapha Berraf.
Discussions highlighted the tangible outcomes emerging from the Assembly, including the planned construction of a football pitch at the Olympafrica Centre in Omaruru, a key initiative delivered through partnerships with FIFA, the International Olympic Committee and ANOCA, underscoring a shared commitment to grassroots development and expanded access to sport.
The meeting further emphasised how such investments in sporting infrastructure and athlete development align with Namibia’s national priorities under NDP6, where sport is recognised as a strategic driver of socio-economic development, youth empowerment and nation-building.
The Head of State extended her appreciation for the work undertaken by the team and expressed her anticipation for the upcoming flag handover as Namibia prepares to participate across various sport codes at the Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place from 23 July to 2 August 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, scheduled for 31 October to 13 November 2026.
The engagement reaffirmed a collective commitment to strengthening collaboration, advancing opportunities for young Namibians, and positioning the country to compete at the highest levels while promoting unity, inclusion and excellence across the Olympic movement.
