The United States has refuted media reports claiming it is advocating for a health package associated with Zambia's critical minerals.

Outgoing US Ambassador to Zambia, Michael Gonzales, stated that, contrary to media reports, his government has committed over US$2 billion to Zambia's health sector since last October.

Gonzales is winding up his tour of duty in Zambia following a recall by his government.

Gonzales participated in various farewell activities last week.

At some point, he gave a speech criticising the current Zambian government for not sealing the loopholes that government officials have been using to pilfer donor funds.

He added, "We can no longer accept empty promises; the future has to look different. The Zambian government must also increase Zambia's staffing, funding, and ownership system. This is not to impose our will; it's the only way that we know Zambia can really own a sustainable health care system and enable robust health care growth."

This speech did not sit well with the government, however.

Zambia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, said in a media statement that Gonzales will be engaged through diplomatic channels.

The American government reacted equally by pulling down a video of Gonzales from the Zambian embassy's Facebook page.

Gonzales began his time in Zambia in 2023. His predecessor, Daniel Foote, was expelled from the country for criticising the previous administration led by Edgar Lungu.
