The National Assembly has unanimously approved President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's nominations of Bryan Eiseb as Director-General of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for a five-year term and Advocate Erna Lorraine van der Merwe as Deputy Director-General for a period not exceeding 12 months.

Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare tabled the motion, saying the fight against corruption remains central to promoting good governance, accountability and the rule of law.

"We are all agreed that corruption condemns the poor to a life of grinding poverty. It weakens national institutions. It steals the future of our children. It steals children's classrooms. It steals the sick their medicine. It is the cost of a textbook that never reaches a rural school. In short, it utterly destroys the trust between the government and the people it's supposed to serve. Therefore, let us work together to ensure that all institutions entrusted with the crucial responsibility of fighting corruption are adequately empowered to execute their functions effectively."

He said Bryan Eiseb and Advocate Erna van der Merwe have the legal qualifications, experience and expertise required to lead the Anti-Corruption Commission.

"Dr. Brian Eiseb is an admitted attorney of the High Court of Namibia with over 37 years of distinguished experience in law enforcement, diplomatic security, corporate risk management and financial governance. Advocate Erna van der Merwe is an admitted legal practitioner of the High Court of Namibia with more than four decades of experience in legislative drafting, public prosecution and anti-corruption governance. The fight against corruption remains central to the promotion of good governance, accountability and the rule of law. It is therefore imperative that institutions entrusted with this responsibility are led by individuals of integrity, competence and proven experience."

The appointments now pave the way for the two nominees to assume their respective responsibilities at the commission.
