Plans are underway to clean up the area surrounding the floating bridge at the Sarusungu Border post on the outskirts of Rundu.
The area has been an eyesore for locals and travellers alike.
The floating bridge connects Kavango East to the Angolan town of Calai.
In 2014, the Namibian and Angolan governments decided to put up this temporary bridge to allow pedestrians and motorists to cross with ease.
It was initially only supposed to be a temporary measure, but it's been 11 years since the bridge was attended to.
The bridge and the surrounding infrastructure were paid for by the Angolan government, but there has been no maintenance from either Namibia or Angola for over a decade.
Waste has accumulated around the bridge, making it difficult for search parties to retrieve the bodies of people who have drowned in the river.
Locals also say the waste is creating a breeding ground for various diseases.
In December 2025, Kavango East Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka inspected the area and said a clean-up campaign will be organised.
"I said by January, we were supposed to have a team dedicated or assigned to go and clean up the area. When we were there, everyone agreed… the place was completely dirty. First we were looking for a company that has a boat, so I was told last month, in May, that we got a boat and the boat is ready. The reason there is a delay is that we were trying to identify a company or a group of people that can do it."
The governor says they have managed to secure a boat for the clean-up campaign.
His office also engaged the National Youth Service to assist with the job because they are more equipped.
"We were supposed to do it last month, at the end of June, but then we postponed it because the young people we were targeting were not ready. They called after a week and said they were ready; they were just waiting for us to call them, and then they would be ready to go to the river to remove those dirty things. So that's what we are going to do, and that's what is going to happen."
It's estimated that it will take about two to three days to clean up the area.
Regarding the upkeep of the bridge, the governor says both countries are working on a way to put together money that would be used to construct a proper structure.
