Chadian health teams are stepping up efforts to contain a cholera outbreak that has killed 13 people and infected 239, with response teams going door to door to disinfect homes and curb transmission.

Workers in N'Djamena in protective gear on Monday prepared sprayers and deployed to affected neighbourhoods to disinfect homes, streets and waste areas.

Cholera Incident Manager Nguetora Guiradoumadji explained.

N'Djamena's outbreak began on 21 July, with 94 cases currently recorded. Unfortunately, of those 94 cases, we have recorded eight deaths. At present, five patients are hospitalised and 81 have recovered.”

Response teams are tracing cases back to homes, disinfecting potentially contaminated areas and educating residents on prevention.

The response has extended beyond N'Djamena, while the Lake area has recorded 83 cases and two deaths across three affected districts.

The outbreak follows a major cholera surge in Chad in 2025, when WHO recorded more than 1,400 cases and 90 deaths by the end of August.

Cholera spreads through contaminated food or water and can spread rapidly where access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is limited.
