The City of Windhoek has commenced with an impact assessment of Thursday's heavy rainfall, which caused flooding and stormwater runoff in several parts.

This follows about 70 millimetres of rain recorded in various parts, resulting in significant stormwater runoff, active river crossing and flooding.

Four to six houses on Garibes Street in Kleine Kuppe were affected, with one property suffering substantial water damage and experiencing a partial collapse of its boundary wall.

Two properties on Pelican Street, Hochland Park, were also affected by flooding.

One person was swept away by a fast-flowing river in the Rand Street area but was rescued and taken to Katutura Intermediate Hospital for further assessment.

A vehicle was also swept away by floodwater in Pelican Street after the driver safely escaped.

CoW's Acting Spokesperson Cillie Kapolo in an update said no fatalities were recorded, while its emergency teams continue assessing affected areas and assisting residents.

“The emergency and disaster risk management team responded to a number of incidents across Windhoek, including residential flooding, blocked stormwater drainage systems and hazardous river crossings. Fortunately, we have not recorded any fatalities.”

As floodwaters recede, Kapolo urged residents and motorists to remain cautious around river crossings and areas affected by stormwater runoff.
