The Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF), has come under fire in the National Assembly, with some Members of Parliament calling for its closure and revamping.

MPs were particularly disturbed by the findings of the Auditor-General, who stated in his latest report that the government had not budgeted for NSFAF's new headquarters.

The debate, which has gone into the NSFAF's operations and its mandate, was first tabled by the Swapo MP, Modestus Amutse.

The main objective of the motion was to establish how NSFAF assists underprivileged families who have no income to pay for registration fees, an issue which appears to be a sore point for some parliamentarians.

During a heated debate, some MPs felt that the establishment of the fund was still a good idea, while others felt otherwise, calling for a review of, among others, the NSFAF funding model to provide financial literacy to the beneficiaries and ensure that students utilise the money prudently for its intended purpose.

Debate continues on the subject in the legislative chamber.
