Oshikoto Governor Sacky Kathindi on Wednesday visited the bereaved family of four people who died in a vehicle accident last Friday between Oshigambo and Onethindi.

The victims were travelling from Nkurenkuru, Kavango West Region, to their village.

Four people have died while 17 others have been injured in a road accident on the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo road, approximately 65 kilometers from Okahandja this morning.

One year after the fatal car crash in which 16 people, comprising police officers, correctional service officers, and two civilians, perished, family members and former colleagues gathered to remember them.

The accident happened last year on the 30th of August near Mariental.

Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi says driving school instructors will have to undergo training to make sure that they are able to train others on how to drive. 

Nekundi says most driving schools only teach how to pass without the technicalities of how to actually drive. 

MPs in the National Council stated that improving road infrastructure will not solve the road crisis issue if road users do not change their behaviour.

The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Housing, George !Garab said road accidents have reached a point where they can no longer be treated as an ordinary transport challenge, as they constitute a national public health, social, economic, and development crisis.

The Ministry of Works and Transport is cracking down on the corrupt issuance of driving licences, warning that bribery and bought licences are putting lives at risk on the roads. 

The Head of Police's traffic law enforcement in Otjozondjupa, Petrus Swartz, has cautioned motorists to adhere to all traffic rules and regulations.

Commissioner Swartz's caution follows an accident south of Otjiwarongo on the B1 road involving two vehicles.
