Luderitz Spar employees strike after wage negotiations reach a deadlock

Twenty-eight, employees of Luderitz Spar in the //Kharas Region are on strike after wage negotiations between the Namibia Food and Allied Workers Union (NAFAU) and Spar Luderitz reached a deadlock. The workers demand that the company pay cleaners a basic salary of N$2500 while cashiers and shelf packers should receive N$3 500 per month. Albertina Kalingwe, an employee says, "I used to feel I'm being abused. At the end of the day, you are getting nothing. You are working hard, you are making a lot of money for the company, you put in your effort, you love your work, but you don't have a choice you have to accept what they give you and that is not good. No pension, no transport, no housing allowance. No benefit, not even a discount on an account if you buy anything." The branch organiser of NAFAU, based in Luderitz, Simon Moses says that it is becoming a concern that grocery shops underpay workers and whenever they raise their concerns they are victimised. Moses appeals to the Ministry of Labour to institute a minimum wage for retail workers. Moses warned Spar management not to undermine striking rules. He also called on Luderitz residents to boycott Spar until the matter is resolved. Moses says, "if we happen to find that there are people inside that want to join us and the management are intimidating them not to come out, then it is also part of the rules that they have violated, so it is going to be a case on top of the other case that they have started already." Spar Luderitz management did not answer questions sent via SMS and telephone. The workers have vowed to continue striking until their demands are met.
