Today marks 35 years since the adoption of the Constitution of Namibia.
The late Founding President Dr. Sam Nujoma led the independent Namibia under the new constitution.
It all started with an oath during his inauguration on March 21 1990, the late Founding President pledged to uphold Namibia's constitution and lead the country that has been under colonial rule for decades under the new constitution.
Finally, Namibians could enjoy fundamental rights, exactly what they fought for during the liberation struggle under his leadership.
The day observed on the 9th of February celebrates the birth of the country's supreme law, as crafted by the Constituent Assembly and adopted in 1990.
The assembly comprised different political parties and was adopted unanimously under the chairmanship of late President Dr. Hage Geingob.
The constitution and laws crafted by Parliament since independence repealed the discriminatory legal instruments of the apartheid era, to ensure that all people are treated equally before the law.
The Constitution guarantees fundamental human rights and freedoms, the rights enjoyed by every citizen of Namibia today.
Namibia's Constitution has been described as one of the most democratic in the world.
Although not a holiday, the day will be commemorated tomorrow with the launch of a commemorative banknote for late President Dr. Hage Geingob by the Bank of Namibia.
