North Korea says it stands ready to deepen bilateral cooperation with Namibia beyond the historical political ties.

That country's ambassador, Jong Song II, reaffirmed the situation following a courtesy call on President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House.

Ties between Namibia and North Korea date back to the struggle for independence, when the Asian country assisted the Swapo Party both politically and militarily.

These relations have remained intact; they have seen the two cooperating in several projects, including the construction of several state installations in Namibia, such as the State House and Independence Memorial Museum, among others.

Some projects were halted, however, following a 2017 UN Security Council directive to member states to cut economic ties with North Korea's Mansudae Overseas Projects company.

The move by the UN was aimed at forcing North Korea to abandon its nuclear programme or face sanctions.

Ambassador Song described the matter as sensitive but affirmed a commitment to cooperation with Namibia in other areas.

"We are also fully prepared to further develop and strengthen those relations, and it is our firm conviction that both countries will work very hard for that purpose."

The North Korean diplomat's visit to the State House was also in part to bid farewell to President Nandi-Ndaitwah.

"I am very much honoured to convey the warm greetings from Comrade Kim Jong Un, President of the State of DPRK and General Secretary of the Workers Party of Korea, to Your Excellency, President of the Republic of Namibia, and the President of Swapo."

In response, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said, "It is part of the responsibility, Excellency; you are here to always find time for one another. You are here representing your country to the President and it is always now and then that you find time to consult as a way of strengthening bilateral relations, so thank you very much. And as a party and as a country, we really value the relationship between the two countries."

Ambassador Jon Song The Second served as non-resident ambassador from the concurrently accredited diplomatic mission based in South Africa, Pretoria.
