President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on Namibians and Africans in general to continue fostering the spirit of ubuntu in growing the African continent, as the world observes Africa Day.

Ubuntu is an ancient African word that translates to 'humanity over others'.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks at Omakolombongo Village, in the Oshana Region.

The President reiterated Namibia's dedication towards the African Union and its ideologies.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah said the day remains significant to the continent, as it reminds Africans to work in harmony towards their own mutual upliftment.

She urged African countries to maintain peace and stability but said that, where they were wronged by other nations, they are entitled to seek redress, as Namibia currently does from the German government.

"Those that have wronged the continent should pay back as compensation for what they have put our people through. The same way as the Namibian government is continuing to engage with the German government, as our national assembly took a decision that they should do something, for they have killed many of our people during the 1904-1905 genocide."

The President added that the continent should not only reflect the challenges it faces but also celebrate how far it has come in crafting beneficial legislation.

"As we commemorate this day, we should remember key milestones we have attained, e.g, Africa's Agenda 2063, which also speaks about intercontinental trade, which will allow our business people to trade their goods and services beyond the borders of their various countries, which will in turn create jobs and grow the economies of their countries and beyond."

This year's commemoration was celebrated under the theme "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations".
