A double murder occurred in the village of Kayeura in the Musese Constituency in the Kavango West Region on Friday afternoon, where two elderly pensioners were killed, allegedly by their grandson.
Chief Inspector Raimbert Muronga of the Namibian Police Force in the region confirmed the incident, saying that the victims, 79-year-old Hamukwaya Clemens and 84-year-old Mukuve Maria Kakove, were found dead at approximately 13:25 after allegedly being hacked to death with an axe at their home.
Muronga further reported that the suspect, a 27-year-old male who is the grandson of the deceased individuals, allegedly used an axe to strike both victims on the back of their necks. Both individuals died at the scene from their injuries.
According to Muronga, the motive for the crime appears to be linked to witchcraft beliefs within the family.
The suspect was arrested and is currently in police custody. He is expected to face murder charges and will appear in court next week under the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act, Act 4 of 2003.
The deceased's next of kin have been informed of their deaths.
