The Okondjatu Combined School hostel in the Okakarara Constituency remains without an ablution facility following a fire outbreak about 12 years ago.
A teacher at the school, Theo Kariua, has expressed frustration over the unfulfilled promises made by various institutions over the years, while the learners continue to suffer.
Constructed in 1970, Okondjatu Combined School is one of the biggest schools in the Okakarara Constituency, accommodating more than one thousand learners.
The challenge, however, is that the ablution facility for part of the hostel's block burned down in 2013 due to an electrical failure.
Though there were visits and promises made by institutions over the years to rebuild it, the hostel block remains the same to date.
The failure rate at the school is also high, as the teacher said there is a need to extend and accommodate more learners in the hostel.
There is also a lack of teachers' houses at the school.
"12 houses, 40 teachers—they must share 12 houses, so imagine the principal has to share a house with 2 other teachers, so the principal has only one sleeping room, no space to cook or whatever to prepare. Those are the challenges."
The school itself is trying to better the situation for teachers and learners alike, but due to limited resources, they cannot meet the standards and requirements needed, hence the need for the Education Ministry's intervention.
