Organizers of the annual Vaalgras Winter Derby informed NBC Sport at Keetmanshoop that all logistics are in place for what is expected to be an exciting rural sporting event that will attract equestrian enthusiasts from all over the country.
The horse racing event will take place in Vaalgras over the weekend.
According to Jegg Christiaan the Chairperson of the Vaalgras Turf Club, the 13th edition of the annual Winter Derby will feature participants competing in ten different races while fifteen horses will compete in a thirty-kilometer endurance race.
Christiaan said that horse racing in the Southern regions of the country is slowly regaining its glory days as a horse racing destination.
"We see now that it is really picking up, but it had for a while died down in the South, especially in the Hardap and //Karas regions. Rehoboth is one of the capitals of horse racing the most prominent racing is now happening in Rehoboth, Okahandja, Gobabis and so on, but Keetmanshoop features much less. With our event and with more participation and more people owning racehorses, we believe that Keetmanshoop will regain its glory as a horse racing destination." he said.
Christiaan called on all equestrian enthusiasts to make their way to Vaalgras to experience the thrill of competing horses on the dusty turf of Vaalgras.
"Miss Namibia 2025 is born and bred in Vaalgras so that has put us on the map recently. We would like people to come and see where we are located, what we do how life is and what opportunities are there. So we invite everyone who wants to find something exciting to do this weekend to come to Vaalgras and enjoy this great horse racing event with us." Christiaan added.
Spectators at the 2025 Vaalgras Winter Derby are in for a treat as there will be entertainment, traditional cuisine and the thrill of experiencing the beautiful landscape of rural Vaalgras.
