The Roads Authority (RA) has officially opened the road from the Hosea Kutako International Airport circle to the airport on the Hage Geingob Freeway.
The RA announced that it has made tremendous progress with the construction of the Hage Geingob Freeway.
The rest of the freeway, however, remains under construction, with phases two (A and B) nearing completion.
"We have given directions or directives to the contractor to ensure that they also complete their work by the end of August. We are intending to open the freeway by the third week of September. We want to open the entire road," explained RA CEO, Dr. Conrad Lutombi.
The road spans close to 50 kilometres, with the estimated value at about N$3 billion.
This includes a grant from the Chinese government of over N$800 million for phase two B, while the rest is sourced through an African Development Bank loan.
Dr. Lutombi said all the projects are within contract value, and they have not encountered any challenges in terms of finances.
"As you can see, this road runs through commercial areas. And one of the issues when we are talking about the N$3 billion is that it also includes compensation. And we compensated those who were affected based on the market value. And I'm happy that through intensive negotiations, we managed to settle with many landowners."
He said the aim is not only to improve road infrastructure but also to contribute to economic development by improving trade and market access.
