The Mayor of Swakopmund, Blasius Goraseb, has praised the town's rising profile as Namibia's hub for sports tourism.
This follows the successful hosting of two major events-the Region 5 Youth Games and the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Games-which brought thousands of athletes and visitors to the coast in recent weeks.
Speaking to NBC Sport News, Mayor Blasius Goraseb reflected on the impact of these recent events, stating that years of deliberate planning and investment are finally paying off.
Recently, Swakopmund welcomed more than 4,000 athletes, officials, and spectators for the SOEs Games, an event that came shortly after the Region 5 Youth Games.
The back-to-back tournaments led to fully booked accommodations, bustling restaurants, and a boom in informal trade-from food vendors to small local businesses.
Goraseb highlighted that Swakopmund is well-equipped to host sporting events of all kinds.
The town is already home to major annual competitions such as the Nedbank Desert Dash, the Rössing Marathon, and the Swakop Uranium Marathon.
The Mayor also expressed his gratitude to the residents of Swakopmund for their cooperation, hospitality, and support during the events.
With its scenic beauty, solid infrastructure, and growing reputation, Swakopmund is quickly becoming a central player in Namibia's sports tourism landscape.
