The much-anticipated Outapi Mayoral Cup brought together teams from across the country last weekend. Held from September 5th to the 7th at the Olufuko Centre in Outapi, the tournament drew enthusiastic support from various regions.
A total of 27 youth soccer teams, 17 legends teams, and over 10 netball teams competed. First-place winners in each category were awarded a combined total of N$60,000.
The Outapi Mayoral Cup aims to unite youth through sport while empowering local communities. The event also served as a platform for sharing ideas and showcasing local produce and talent.
"I appreciate all the participants," said Selma Nelago Asino Shaunbwako, the Mayor of Outapi. "The idea from the Outapi Town Council was to create a platform for young people to showcase their talent and strengthen our national connectivity."
The mayor added that the tournament is part of the council's corporate social responsibility. "We want to create opportunities for young SMEs to display their products and benefit from the exposure," she said.
"This tournament is for the community," she concluded. "We must hold hands and work together to build unity."
Shipena Nakalondo, Vice Chairman of the Mayoral Cup, also shared his thoughts.
"Thanks to the Outapi Town Council for bringing sport to the people," Nakalondo said. "We're happy with the progress—especially in netball and football. As a region, we're doing well."
Nakalondo is optimistic about the future. "When we return to the drawing board to propose next year's tournament, we'll have positive results to show. We need another year to continue this momentum."
The mayor expressed hope that the tournament will become an annual tradition, creating job opportunities for locals and boosting the town's visibility.
