Namibia will soon introduce a sex offenders registry.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Justice and Labour Relations Minister Wise Immanuel explained that individuals convicted of sex crimes will be listed on the sex offenders registry for public safety, awareness, law enforcement monitoring, and legal compliance.
Immanuel informed the public that the ministry remains firmly committed to finalising the registry in collaboration with the police.
"The register is long overdue. Given the scourge of sexual violence, the register will eventually cover all sexual offences. The court will decide on the duration of listings while balancing justice and protecting juveniles, who will be excluded from the register. Access will be through clearance certificates to safeguard the safety and dignity of people involved or concerned."
He added that the government has also strengthened laws combating rape and domestic violence to ensure tougher sentences and enhance victim protection.
