Governors from the Oshana, Oshikoto, and Omusati regions have made key recommendations following their joint assessment of the recent fire outbreak at Etosha National Park.
During the assessment, the governors emphasised the need for stronger coordination and faster communication between emergency teams. To achieve this, they recommended the creation of a dedicated WhatsApp group to facilitate real-time information sharing during fire incidents. The team also resolved that the governors will write formal letters requesting additional firefighting equipment, including blowers, Caspers, and fire beaters, to boost response capacity.
In addition, the governors urged the Namibian Defence Force and the Namibian Police to request aerial support to help monitor and contain fires in the park.
They further emphasised the importance of equipping the three existing communication centres with the proper tools to enhance coordination and improve response times during emergencies.
These recommendations aim to strengthen disaster preparedness and ensure a more effective response to future fire outbreaks in and around Etosha National Park.
