The Namibian Police Force in the Kunene Region held a handover ceremony recently to symbolise the transition of regional command following the retirement of its long-serving regional commander, James Nderura.

Individuals from various parts of the Kunene region convened in Opuwo to observe the transfer of the office of the Regional Commander from Retired Commissioner James Nderura to Commissioner Eric Clay, who assumes the role of the new Regional Commander for the region.

The Inspector General of the Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, encouraged Commissioner Clay to continuously engage the community as one of his core duties.

His speech was read on his behalf.

"The challenges may be great, but I have no doubt that you will meet them with courage, integrity, and professionalism. The trust placed in you is not just by the NamPol senior management but by the citizens of this region, and it is an immense responsibility that I am sure you will honour with dignity and commitment."

Commissioner Clay acknowledged and thanked his predecessor in his acceptance speech, stating that he concluded his tenure with outstanding performance.

He called for continued support, partnership, and cooperation among the public in pursuit of fulfilling the mandate of the Police Force, which is to keep the region safe.

"My vision for this region is rooted in the Namibian Police Force Strategic Plan, Pillar Number Two – Building Partnerships. The police and the public must work hand in hand. Regardless of cultural, political, or socio-economic backgrounds, the majority of people share one common desire: to live in a peaceful and prosperous community."

Retired Commissioner Nderura said he was retiring a proud man, as the region's low crime rate is a clear indication of some of the successes of his tenure.

"I must also thank my staff members and stakeholders for being so supportive during my tenure as Regional Commander. I had always prayed for an honourable exit, and I am happy the Almighty has granted it. I leave with my head high because of the reduction in crime in the region, which is the primary objective of every police officer and law-abiding citizen."

Governor of the Kunene region, Vipuakuje Muharukua, said that the Kunene Region has continued to enjoy stable and favourable crime statistics, reflecting not only strategic policing but also Nderura's emphasis on community cooperation and inter-agency collaboration.

Kunene is currently ranked as the region with the second-lowest crime rate in the country.
