The 93rd INTERPOL General Assembly elected Lucas Phillipe from France as its new president.

The four-day conference held in Marrakech, Morocco, started on Monday and concluded today.

As INTERPOL's highest decision-making body, the Assembly sets the global law enforcement agenda and shapes the organisation's strategic priorities.

NamPol's Deputy Inspector General for Administration Anne Marie Nainda had contested for the position and came in third place after three rounds of election.

Philippe secured 84 votes, defeating Türkiye's candidate, Mustafa Sabancı, who secured 60 votes.

Coming in at third place was Namibia's Anne-Marie Nainda, while Ethiopia's Demelash Weldies came in last.

Major General Nainda addressed the General Assembly and spoke on themes of unity, global security and shared responsibility.

"I believe that global security must evolve with purpose, unity and courage. In this room we can change the future of justice and security for millions across the globe."

Nainda's candidacy bid received support from President Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah and was endorsed by SADC and the Ministries of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security and International Relations and Trade.

The Inspector General of the Namibian Police, who accompanied Nainda to the INTERPOL gathering, expressed gratitude to Namibia and all nations that backed her.

He said even though Namibia did not secure the position, its voice in terms of commitment to global safety was amplified.

Meanwhile, the INTERPOL General Assembly elected six new members to serve on its Executive Committee, comprising the President, the Vice-President for Asia, and Delegates for Africa, Asia, and Europe.

The Executive Committee is responsible for providing strategic guidance, overseeing the implementation of General Assembly decisions and ensuring alignment with the organisation's priorities.

Members serve three-year terms, except for the President, who serves a four-year term.

The new members are Interpol President Lucas Philippe of France, Vice President for Asia Wang Yong of China, Delegate for Africa Issam Fetoui of Tunisia, Delegate for Africa Mohamed Ibrahim Amin of Kenya, Delegate for Asia Kazumi Ogasawara of Japan and Delegate for Europe Stefano Carvelli of Italy.
