The National Housing Enterprise (NHE)'s housing project at Chotto Extension 55 and 56 in Katima Mulilo is progressing steadily, with land servicing at about 50 percent complete.
Valued at N$60 million, the project is expected for completion by July 2026. The Katima Mulilo Town Council provided the land for the construction of 546 houses at no cost.
Corporate Communications and Marketing Manager Mutonga Matali said that the company has made a significant investment of N$55.4 million that has secure jobs.
“We have injected an investment here, and over 70 locals have been employed. This is a huge number when it comes to employment creation because land servicing is machinery-based when compared to the construction of houses.”
Mutongo added that provision has been made for four pump stations with regard to addressing the sewer reticulation issues experienced in the town.
During their working visit, the company’s Executive for Infrastructure Development, Thomas Shilongo highlighted the importance of building decent housing through servicing land.
“We are looking at installing your sewer system, your water system. These are water reticulation installing your roads as well as installing your electricity. When we call for decent housing, a house cannot be called a decent house if it doesn't have the services.”
Shilongo added that NHE's partnership with the Development Workshop Namibia on this project has been vital in realising the delivery of housing in Namibia.
In addition to the housing unit project, NHE has introduced a National Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme starting with Chotto Extensions 1 and 2, for 5 years. This initiative targets the construction of 10,000 houses per year.
As part of the programme, the service teams will conduct a door-to-door visit in informal settlements to determine the type of housing category each beneficiary qualifies for.
