The Minister of Education, Sanet Steenkamp, has visited the Zambezi Region to assess the impact of flooding on the education sector.
Dr. Steenkamp visited the affected Nankutwe Combined and Namiyundu Primary Schools, as well as the relocation centres at Lusese and Schumansburg Combined School.
The government is working to determine how schools and learners affected by the floods can be supported. Immediate needs include shelter, food aid, water, boats, and proper ablution and sanitation facilities.
In her address to the parents, Dr. Steenkamp commended them for allowing learners to relocate to ensure that learning continues.
“So, I want to reassure our parents that the government is making deliberate efforts and that funds will be made available to ensure that we have the required food supplies and toiletries for the children and teachers who need to relocate, as well as the necessary infrastructure upgrades. As we speak, there are people working behind the scenes, drawing up everything that must be procured—whether through direct procurement or by following formal procurement processes. We are fully aware that the task ahead of you is not easy. We have seen and experienced it with you today, and we truly appreciate your tenacity and skilfulness."
Concerns raised include a lack of boats for the transportation of learners.
The Director for Planning and Rural Development at the regional council, Beaven Walubita, said that plans are underway.
“That process is still ongoing. It is not just Nankutwe; Muzi and Mpukano also need to be addressed. The plan is still in place. We have engaged consultants, and there are procedures that must be followed. We cannot proceed without following the correct procedures, as this could lead to flooding in nearby villages,” Walubita added.
