Southern Namibia Hake fishing company temporary workers at Lüderitz, who were laid off two years ago, are demanding reinstatement.

The workers, under the banner of the Namibia Seamen and Allied Workers Union, alleged that since the termination of their employment, the company has been benefiting from quota allocation as though they were part of its workforce.

Spokesperson for the workers, Vanessa Konraad, said they want immediate reinstatement.

"We are requesting to be reinstated to our positions, the reason being that the company has enough quotas to which our names are part. We are also demanding that Southern Hake stop selling quotas that are allocated for Lüderitz to companies in Walvis Bay while we, the employees, are suffering. Quotas are for job creation, not for self-enrichment," she said.

The company management refused to receive the workers' petition.

Its General Manager, Paul Schroeter, also declined to comment, noting that he is not at liberty to speak to the media.
