Windhoek City Police has expressed concern over staff shortages amid a rapidly growing city and limited resources.
Leevi Ileka, Head of Windhoek City Police Service, highlighted a critical gap between the number of surveillance cameras and operators. “We have about 500 cameras but only two or three operators monitoring them. We need at least 20 to 25,” Ileka said.
He revealed that over 150 members have resigned, creating a staffing vacuum. Currently, the police force numbers 167 officers, and efforts are underway to recruit more personnel.
“We need better resources, including vehicles, so that teams can be deployed effectively. Policing will run more smoothly once we address these gaps,” Ileka noted.
He set targets for 2027, aiming to reduce crime by 7%, vehicle accidents by 10%, injuries from accidents by 5%, and fatalities by 10%.
