Members of parliament in the National Council supported the vote for the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, commending the government for installing network towers in key village areas.
They urged further enhancements in regions where connectivity has not yet reached full potential, speaking during the committee stage of the Appropriation Bill.
MPs called for improved network coverage along the road between Oranjemund and Rosh Pinah and expressed dissatisfaction with some towers still operating on 3G technology since 2019.
Andreas Amundjindi, Councillor of the Uukwiyuushona Constituency, said the budget should fund more networks so rural learners can access the internet for research, online classes, and exam results, while clinics and towns can send patient information or order medicine.
Kabbe South Constituency Councillor Raymond Sezuni called for telecom operators and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to share equipment for better coverage, noting some areas still lack NBC signals entirely.
Daniel Kuuoko from the Epupa Constituency thanked the ministry for the new towers at Punele but stressed communication remains vital for rural schools, clinics, and villages.
Hercules Jantze, Councillor for the Daweb Constituency, praised towers in Uibes, where people now have contact options despite lacking hospitals or clinics.
Oranjemund Constituency Councillor Nestor Sheimi highlighted poor coverage between Oranjemund and Rosh Pinah in the national park, warning accidents there could be fatal without network access.
Progress Sipapela from the Linyanti Constituency cited 3G towers in the Zambezi Region, like Kapani and Sabinda, that fail even when standing next to them, preventing students from studying and delaying emergency responses like ambulances.
The MPs called on the government to prioritise network connectivity in clinics, schools, and hospitals, stressing that reliable communication is vital during emergencies.
