The NBC Marathon stands as a key fixture on the national athletic calendar, providing a premier platform for promoting fitness, wellness, and active lifestyles across Namibia.
The marathon event brings together corporate leadership, sports administrators, and athletes from all walks of life. The initiative aims to strengthen the country's road running culture by offering a highly visible, structured platform that inspires community engagement and healthy habits from the grassroots level up.
Namibian Broadcasting Corporation Director General, Menesia Muinjo, explained that the event is a deliberate extension of the national broadcaster's role in community building and consistent social development."The marathon run is not only about keeping the mind, body, and soul in shape, and a reflection of health and wellness, but also about consistency in what we do at NBC," Muinjo noted. "It is intentional, and it shows how we continue to grow, expand, and attract various categories of runners."
Namibia Sport Commission Chief Administrator, Freddy Mwiya, welcomed the steady rise of road running events nationwide, highlighting that long-term institutional support is vital for creating sustainable opportunities for local athletes.
"We are building that culture," Mwiya explained. "NBC is among those promoting marathons in Namibia, encouraging people to live healthy lifestyles through participation. We call on Namibians to register, and we also urge Athletics Namibia to support this initiative. We will also use our platforms to ensure continued promotion."
While the event encourages mass participation, it also directly addresses the historical limitation of high-profile distance running events within the country. Acting Head of the NBC Sport Desk, Chester Uamunika, highlighted that media visibility acts as a powerful catalyst for the growth and structural development of any sporting discipline.
"The growth of the NBC Marathon reflects an important reality that when sport is given visibility, structure, and consistent support, it can grow very well," Uamunika said. "As NBC, we are proud that this marathon has become a living example of the role a broadcasting institution can play in the nation's sports development. Beyond that, it continues to inspire participation and engagement in road running across the country."
The annual initiative continues to provide Namibian runners with a structured competitive platform, with registration accessible to the public through the official NBC portal as organizers look to expand the footprint of athletics across the nation.
