Senior lecturer at the University of Namibia, Dr. Gerson Sindano, has urged the people of Kavango West to explore their historical connection to the 1904-1908 genocide.
He told the gathering at Nkurenkuru that the region was the epicentre of German colonialism and played a part in the history of the Herero and Nama people.
"Feel proud that this was one of the areas in the history of this nation where people decided even in the face of destruction, in the darkest, in the deepest depths, the darkest hour of this nation. People stood up against the colonial forces."
Dr. Sindano urged locals to study these events to understand Kavango West's role in Namibia's past.
Governor of Kavango West Region, Verna Sinimbo, urged young people to continue learning about the historical foundations that shape the country and Namibian identity.
"As a nation, we carry the collective responsibility to preserve the memory of those who suffered and perished while ensuring that the lessons of history continue to guide us towards peace, justice, human dignity, reconciliation, and national unity. This year's regional commemoration further demonstrates the government's commitment to decentralising national programmes and bringing important national reflections closer to our communities."
