Environment and Tourism Minister Indileni Daniel says there may be a need to cull elephants in the Kunene Region to control a growing population.

Daniel responded to a question by Nudo leader Vetaruhe Kandorozu, who raised concerns over roaming elephants in the Kunene Region destroying crops and property of residents.

Kandoruzu questioned whether or not the Ministry of Environment has put in place measures to control the elephant population in the area and how affected people are to be compensated.

"The number of elephants roaming around Omatjete, Daures constituency and Kunene that are destroying the properties of our communities, both communal and commercial, is high, but yet there is no assistance. When you are asking for the ministry officials to come and assist, there is a normal traditional excuse that there is no transport."

Minister of Environment and Tourism, Indileni Daniel, stated that the ministry is aware of the matter, acknowledging the need for population control.

" Everything to happen requires finance. And I understand very well; yes, we do have a population that we need to control."

She further stated that the ministry does have a formula to compensate those who have lost their crops and properties caused by wildlife.

" We do have some elephants that are normally residents in the areas that we are talking about. And we do also have migrating elephants, which are caused by various factors. So the measures that we are taking, in terms of when somebody incurs destruction of property or whatsoever, there are methods and ways in the ministry on how to compensate."
