The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), in partnership with Namibia Medical Care (NMC), held a wellness day aimed at promoting employees' physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and reinforcing corporate commitment to a healthy and productive workforce.

The Acting Chief HR and Administration Officer Gerson Kamatuka says NBC is a work environment that is deadline-driven, and that is why the organisation is driven to improve employee wellness.

"We need those employee well-being interventions. Okay, and that is even more important because here at NBC we have deadlines; the pressure is too much to work with, extend our people and intend our people. It's just another kind of environment."

NBC's HR Business Partner, Gideon Sikeni, says organisational performance is anchored on a strong foundation of physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

"When we invest in our wellbeing, we each get positively improved work balance to improve our overall quality of life, thereby unlocking our performance potential."

Mental health activist Ngajozikue Kavikairiua has called on employees to manage their emotions, emphasising that emotions should serve as guides rather than controllers of behaviour.

He also emphasised that emotions are automatic responses to external events and are expressed through feelings, physical reactions, and behaviour.

"So our emotions are there as a guide, not to control us. So when the taxi driver drives in front of you, what's the emotion that you feel? A lot of us can feel envy. And then you start hooting at it; you start throwing hands at it. What have you done? You've let your emotions control you. But the emotions, that response that comes out of there, are that it's an alert. But instead of reacting and being alert, you start getting angry. So your emotions are there to guide you. Why are you angry? You're actually not angry; you're not scared. And you're responding in anger. Because this person has caused the damage to the car and so on."

Here is what NBC employee Soomie Nepando had to say.

"I will say kudos to the H.R. department for ensuring that wellness is a part of our culture, and in cases of mental wellbeing, they are really looking out for us."
