The City of Windhoek (CoW) will begin a mass illegal electricity connection removal exercise on the first of September.

Most illegal connections are in Otjomuise, Okuryangava, Havana, Hakahana and Goreangab Dam.

CoW says illegal and unsafe electrical wiring has become a serious threat to life and property.

According to CoW, over the past five years, more than eight people have died, with numerous others injured due to electrocution and fires caused by illegal setups.

NBC News spoke to some of the residents in the Katutura residential area, and they are not pleased with the decision.

The team also sought answers from the Moses Garoeb Constituency Council, Stephanus Ndengu, to see if he foresees a possible solution to the matter.

A request to visit his office was turned down.

He, however, said his office was aware of the illegal electricity connections and that residents need electricity.
