The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) is serving as a catalyst in creating direct linkages with established buyers and distributors in Namibia.
BITC is a government agency that promotes and facilitates investment and export in the southern African country.
In an interview with NBC News, BITC Director Moemedi Mokgosi said a series of Botswana-Namibia Meet the Buyer Missions have been organised to provide a structured platform for engagement.
Mokgosi said the platform enables participating companies in Botswana to present their products and services to potential Namibian buyers and distributors while exploring potential market access opportunities without the need for physical travel.
"Namibia is a key market to Botswana, and we see it as a potential alternative route to South Africa. Remember that through the Walvis Bay corridor port, we really need to enhance how we utilise the Trans-Kalahari Corridor. We are seeing a bit of potential in terms of enhancing the trade relations between Botswana and Namibia. The latest ITC data shows that trade between Botswana and Namibia remains highly concentrated in a few strategic commodities, particularly diamonds and petroleum products.”
The 2024 Botswana-Namibia trade balance shows that while overall bilateral trade exceeded N$18 million, the composition of trade reveals important opportunities for diversification and regional value-chain development.
Botswana imported goods worth about N$167 billion from Namibia, with non-industrial diamonds and petroleum products accounting for over 94% of total imports, underscoring Namibia's importance as a source of strategic mineral and energy products.
