President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has confirmed that Namibia is drafting a nuclear energy policy supported by legislation as the government seeks to turn uranium wealth into electricity.

The President's announcement follows a tour of the China General Nuclear Power Corporation's facilities in China's Guangdong Province, where the Namibian delegation gained first-hand insight into how uranium is processed for nuclear energy production.

The state-owned energy giant operates one of the world's largest clean energy portfolios and imports uranium from Namibia's Husab Mine for processing and nuclear fuel production.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah said the visit provided first-hand insight into how uranium is processed before it reaches China's nuclear power plants, encouraging Namibia's determination to harness its own resources for domestic energy generation.

"The visit there is just really to understand the whole operation, which I appreciate. They have even explained to us how the uranium moves and the different levels because they say they are not taking it raw as such, but it is processed to a certain level. But at one point it has now come to China," she said.

The development of nuclear energy complements Namibia's long-term strategy to diversify its energy mix and secure a reliable electricity supply.

"As a producer of uranium, we cannot run away. We cannot allow our natural resources not to be used by us to the maximum, and the maximum is when it's going to create energy," said Nandi-Ndaitwah.
