Organised by the Karibib Athletics Club, the event allows young athletes to compete while supporting their development through sport.
Erongo Governor Dr Nathalia Goagoses reaffirmed her commitment to using sport to support young people and strengthen communities.
Her remarks were delivered on her behalf by Erongo Regional Council Chairperson Lazarus Kanelombe.
“The club serves 54 athletes and provides far more than athletic training. It offers a supportive environment where young people receive nutritious meals, participate in after-school educational programmes and engage in activities such as spelling bees, science fairs, chess and anti-doping education. These initiatives demonstrate a holistic approach to youth development by recognising that successful athletes must also become responsible citizens, lifelong learners and positive contributors to society."
Founded in 2024, the Karibib Athletics Club now supports 54 athletes through sport, education and mentorship programmes.
Goagoses said sport promotes discipline, leadership and positive values while helping address youth challenges such as school dropouts, substance abuse and unemployment.
“The challenges facing many of our communities are well known. School dropouts, alcohol abuse, drug abuse and unemployment continue to threaten the future of many young people. These challenges require collective action from families, communities, civil society and government. The Karibib Athletics Club has demonstrated that sport can be a powerful tool for addressing these social challenges. By providing structured activities, mentorship and positive role models, the club keeps young people engaged, focused and motivated to pursue productive paths in life."
Meanwhile, Karibib Mayor Davey Van Wyk urged young athletes to do their best, support one another and enjoy the competition.
He said the event promotes participation, friendship and healthier communities beyond competition.
The mayor thanked parents, teachers, coaches and volunteers for helping children build teamwork, discipline and confidence.
“This field is full of energy, smiles and dreams in running shoes! Today is not just about who runs the fastest or jumps the highest. Today is about showing up, trying your best, cheering for your friends and having fun together. To our young athletes, you are already winners because you are here. Be brave, be kind to each other, and remember that every race, every throw and every cheer makes our community stronger and healthier."
The event brought together young athletes in various track and field events, supporting talent development, education and youth development through sport.
