Counting of ballots is underway in Zambia following successfully holding general polls on Thursday.

The day started on a good note as people lined up to cast their votes.

President Hakainde Hichilema and his family joined the queue to cast his vote.

Speaking after casting his vote, Hichilema hailed the peaceful environment in which the elections were held.
“We came into public office with a clear vision, anchored on accelerating economic growth and that can only happen with investments and that we can create jobs, we can create business opportunities can create treasury income.”

Votes counted so far shows Hichilema of the United Party for National Development in the lead.

His closest rival, Brian Mundubile of National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) is trailing at around 30%.

The rest of the other 12 candidates share about 4%.
