U19 Women cricket team deemed for greatness

Having achieved great success at the Eight Nations international tournament in Botswana this year, Namibia's under 19 girls are performing exceptionally well. Appreciative of the existing support from the community, the women however feel that women's contribution to sport is not recognised enough. The captain of the U19 team, Yasmeen Khan, said women deserve the same exposure in sport as the men do. "We aren’t really recognised as much as men are. I think if we get that right, the women would also feel appreciated and they would work harder and achieve their goals that the men are achieving at the moment" she said. Senior women's captain Irene Van Zyl said more can be done to create awareness for women's involvement in sport. "I think there is a little more that can be done for ladies sport overall, just not cricket. I just think some people have this stereotype (in mind)of how it some sport is just made for guys, which I think is not the case. We’d like to see some more backing and more support." The under 19 girls make up the base of the senior women's team and will be touring South Africa next year in January to play friendly games against Northern’ s women team and the Gauteng woman’s team.
