The Inspector General of the Police is in the Kunene Region to engage the communities and assess their needs. 

While there, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo will share with the communities the role of law enforcement agencies in society.

The communities informed Shikongo about the need for police stations in various areas while also expressing their concern about an increase in alcohol and drug abuse, stock theft, and gender-based violence.

Shikongo noted that the community must collaborate with the police to mitigate crimes in the region.

Sesfontein faces transformation with challenges

The Councillor of the Sesfontein Constituency, Hendrick Gaobaeb, says development in the constituency is noticeable; however, more needs to be done to upgrade the road network. 

Sesfontein has developed significantly over the years, as the settlement did not have communication infrastructure or electricity, and there were no radio or television receptions until 2004.

The settlement now prides itself on having all these services, including those of the Ministries of Gender, Agriculture, and Works and a settlement office.

Persistent drought affects water provision to Kunene residents

The persistent drought in the Kunene Region is affecting water provision for residents.

Kunene Regional Council Acting Director for Planning and Development, Charles Uarije, made these remarks during the Regional and Local Government Administrative Leadership Session at Opuwo.

Uarije says even though the region has the Kunene River, it depends on boreholes for water provision.

With a population of more than 90,000 inhabitants, about 60% of whom live in rural settings, they depend on livestock for their livelihood.

Task team to assess desalination plant need in Kunene Region

A task team has been set up to investigate the need for desalination plants at villages in the Kunene Region to purify salty underground water amid a persistent drought in the area.

This was confirmed by Regional Governor Marius Sheya following a recent one-day fact-finding mission to affected areas in the Khorixas Constituency.

Transport challenges hampers food aid delivery in Khorixas

As drought persists across the Kunene Region, Khorixas' constituency office is challenged by transport to deliver much-needed food aid to rural residents.

This was confirmed by Constituency Councillor Sebastian !Gobs in an interview with nbc News.

The persistent drought spell in the area has affected both humans and livestock, including harvesting and grazing pastures, as little or no rainfall has been received there for years.

Khorixas' five settlements have over 2,700 households affected and in need of drought food aid.

17 households in the OvaHimba community evicted from resettlement farm

Family members from 17 households in the OvaHimba community have been evicted from a resettlement farm on the outskirts of Kamanjab in the Kunene Region.

The affected families, who have been living alongside the gravel road for two weeks now, said they have nowhere to go.

The group of about 40 people told nbc News that they were dumped here by the new owner, who settled on the farm at the beginning of this year.
