Recognition of Namibian Sign Language as one of national languages tabled

The Deputy Minister of Disability Affairs, Alexia Manombe-Ncube, has tabled a motion in the National Assembly for the official recognition of Namibian Sign Language as one of the national languages of Namibia.

She also proposed the appointment of sign language interpreters for live parliamentary debates.

Qualification criteria for enumerators broadened

The Namibia Statistics Agency's (NSA) Chief Executive Officer, Alex Shimuafeni, says they broadened the qualification criteria for enumerators from Grade 12 to Grade 10 to address unemployment.

This comes after several protests by youth in different parts of the country, claiming they were excluded.

Omugulugwombashe road construction progress

Visible progress is being made on the ongoing upgrade of the Omungulugwombashe gravel road, which is being upgraded by the government to low-volume tarred road standard.

The government has allocated N$35 million for the 22-kilometre road from Tsandi to the Omugulugwoombashe memorial shrine.

Smoking rife among teenagers in Namibia

Statistics provided by the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) indicate that 31% of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15 are already smoking, while about 50% are exposed to secondhand smoking.
