People with disabilities call on ECN to be more inclusive

The Chairperson of People with Disabilities in the Ohangwena Region, Asser Shikongo, has called on the Electoral Commission of Namibia (EC) to, in the build-up to the national elections, be mindful of their responsibilities to citizens with disabilities. 

Representing the Regional Development Coordinating Committee, Shikongo took up the plight of the people with disabilities, saying their democratic rights are not respected, given the unavailability of information related to general voter registration in formats more easily accessible to the community.

Ohangwena officials concerned over delayed government vehicle repairs

Ohangwena regional leadership has expressed dismay about the slow pace at which government vehicles are repaired at Ondangwa.

They were speaking during Works and Transport Deputy Minister Veikko Nekundi's courtesy visit to the office of Ohangwena Governor Sebastian Ndeitunga.

At the meeting, the issue of government cars taking a long time to be serviced at the Ondangwa government garage was high on the agenda.

Some cars allegedly take up to three years to be serviced, leading to poor service delivery to their constituents.

Minister Veikko Nekundi assesses road conditions in Okongo constituency

Works and Transport Deputy Minister Veikko Nekundi visited the Okongo constituency in the Ohangwena Region to assess earth-track roads in that area.

These hard-to-navigate sandy roads are hampering development and making it difficult for communities to access schools and health centres promptly.

Deputy Minister Nekundi was informed by the Councillor of Okongo Constituency, Lebbeus Shipindo, that since independence, his constituency has never been provided with a single feeder road.

Ohangwena education sector plagued by shortage of classrooms

The Ohangwena Region's education sector is faced with a myriad of challenges, including a shortage of classrooms and a lack of sufficient infrastructure, among others.

This was brought to light during a consultation meeting held at Ondobe on Monday between the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Science, ICT, and Youth Development and education stakeholders.

The aim of the gathering was to share ideas, information, views, and perspectives on the current crisis in the education sector in Ohangwena Region, which has 126,342 learners spread across 290 schools. 

Government committed to ensure citizens have access to basic needs- Theofelus

Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, re-affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring that all citizens reap the benefits of independence. 

She stated that providing access to basic and essential needs is crucial for the development and well-being of every Namibian.

Addressing the residents of Oshikunde Constituency during the belated 34th Independence celebration held at Oshifitu Village in Ohangwena Region, Theofelus says since Independence, so many dreams have been realised as a result of economic emancipation.

Ponhofi Annual Schools Tournament Draws Regional Competitors

Situated less than ten kilometers from the Namibia-Angola border, Ponhofi Senior Secondary School played host to over 30 schools from different central-northern regions on 12-13th April.

These schools came together for the annual Ponhofi Schools Tournament, which aims to foster a positive sporting environment and encourage fitness and teamwork among schools and regions.

Four sport - football, netball, basketball, and volleyball - were contested simultaneously at various courts and fields.

Vandalism, theft of water borehole equipment leave communities without water

Vandalism and theft of water borehole equipment such as cylinders and solar panels are rampant in the Ohangwena Region.

This has left some communities without water during this critical time when it is needed most.

During the recent handover of deep boreholes to the community by the Office of the Prime Minister in the Ohangwena Region, the governor expressed disappointment with the irresponsible acts by criminals who are depriving the community of this scarce resource.

Linda Shihepo, freedom fighter, laid to rest at Eenhana Memorial Shrine

Freedom fighter Linda Shihepo was buried at the Eenhana Memorial Shrine in the Ohangwena Region.

The late Shihepo (99), who died on the 8th of last month, was conferred an official funeral.

Her role in the liberation struggle started in the 1960s, when her home accommodated Swapo PLAN fighters.

During her memorial service at Omundundu Village, speaker after speaker reflected on her life journey as someone who stood against oppression and injustice.

Ohangwena battles Malaria outbreak

The Ohangwena Region has recorded a total of 392 cases of malaria.

Of these, 154 cases have been acquired locally in Ohangwena, while 238 originated elsewhere.

Ohangwena cases started to peak during the second week of January, whereby Eenhana recorded 107 cases, followed by Engela with 71 cases and Okongo with 47 cases.

The local cases recorded in Eenhana are 69, followed by Okongo with 60 cases and 25 cases recorded in Engela.
