Some residents of Kongola in the Zambezi Region are concerned about the high incidences of prison breaks at the Menias Brian Libuto Police Station.
Addressing the media today, the group's spokesperson, Kilo Manyando, said four prison breaks have been reported since the police station opened in 2014. During this period, 31 inmates escaped, of which only seven were rearrested.
This, he said, has become a concern for the safety of the residents of Kongola and the surrounding areas.
Manyando noted that constant prison breaks will affect the tourism industry given the strategic location of the area with an abundance of wildlife.
The community believes that a review of the current design and reconstruction of the holding cells is necessary.
The community is therefore appealing for the number of police officers at the Manias Brian Libuto Police Station to be increased to reduce the risk of prison breaks.
