Otjozondjupa Regional Council Chairperson Marlayn Mbakera visited the family of a 15-year-old boy who committed suicide last weekend in Otjwarongo.

Mbakera says the National School Safety Framework needs to be implemented, as it is suspected that the suicide was a result of alleged bullying at the hostel.

The late Fabian Kariue, affectionately known as Bobo, was a grade 10 learner at Otjiwarongo Secondary School.

Kariue resided in the hostel last year, and due to complaints of being beaten at night while asleep, his father arranged private accommodation for him.

However, due to financial constraints, Kariue was asked to move back to the hostel again this year, something that the family suspects triggered him to commit suicide.

Visiting the family and mourners at the house where Kariue committed the deed, Mbakera said safety in hostels should be prioritised.

Kariue's grandmother, who raised him since he was 6 months old, said she did not suspect that there was anything wrong with him.

The Otjozondjupa Regional Council will see to it that the sister and grandmother receive counselling as well as the late Kariue's classmates.

He will be buried at Ozondati village in the Omaruru Constituency on Saturday.
