A long-awaited dream of a fully fledged secondary school in Omulonga Constituency, in the Ohangwena Region, is finally becoming a reality.

The construction of the Ongula Senior Secondary School reached 70% completion, with the first phase expected to be completed in November.

The school will be the first senior secondary school in the constituency.

With a population of approximately 32,000 people, Omulonga is the most populous constituency in the Ohangwena Region.

Councillor of the Omulonga Constituency Erickson Ndawanifa explained that the new school is expected to reduce congestion at schools and improve access to secondary education.

"The concept was conceived in 2010, and we have been submitting it annually until 2026. The aspirations are realised. We are extremely pleased with the project and are deeply grateful for the support of the community. We are urging the community to continue to support the project until its completion and to ensure that this school remains the first senior secondary school in Omulonga."

Once completed, the school will comprise 28 classrooms, a library, and science and computer laboratories with learners from Grades 10 to 12.

The second phase of the project will include the construction of a hostel.

The Otunganga Circuit Inspector of Education, Crispin Masule, under which the school falls, said the establishment of the school will help ease admission pressure in both the constituency and the region.

Masule said there are about 14,000 learners.

“Otunganga Circuit has no secondary school; we only have combined schools, which have upgraded from pre-primary to Grade eleven. We do not have a Grade 12, but we have eight combined schools that we have upgraded from pre-primary to Grade 11. So you can see the challenge in terms of leadership and management, because these principals are running four phases—junior primary, senior primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary. It is not that easy. Now with this state of the art, Ongula Secondary School is the answer to a cry.”

The construction of the school is expected to be completed over a two-year period.
