The new bishop of the Reformed Evangelical Anglican Church (REACH) ,Reverend Nelson Ndakevondjo has been consecrated at a ceremony in Ondangwa.

Dr. Sigfried Ngubane of REACH South Africa presided over the consecration service, which saw the 35-year-old Ndakevondjo becoming the third Bishop of REACH-Namibia.

He previously served as the reverend of REACH congregations at Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Ondangwa.

At the consecration ceremony, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, who was among the churchgoers, said that cultural diversity, traditions, and religion should unite Namibians under the umbrella of "One Namibia, One Nation."

Dr. Ngurare added that diversity should not be allowed to cause division amongst citizens, but should be seen as a source of strength and unity amongst the country's inhabitants and visitors alike.

He commended churches for playing a crucial role pre- and post-independence, saying it is in them that people learn compassion, truth, humility, and justice, among others, as values that define public lives and national policies.

The premier applauded the youth for raising their voices in worship, saying it's an indication that religion remains an integral part of their lives and choices.

"I am especially moved today by the presence and participation of so many young people in this congregation. To see the youth raising their voices in worship and taking part in the life of the church is a very powerful sight. It is a sign of a church that is alive, a church that is relevant, and a church that is investing in the future."

Independent Patriots for Change's president, Dr Panduleni Itula, also praised the new bishop.

"It's a very good thing that we just witnessed today here, and we are indeed blessed and pleased for this occasion. I am blessed to be here. I wish him all the best in serving the word of God across the country and beyond."

The event was also attended by Oshana Governor Elia Irimari, MP Job Amupanda and various other high-profile politicians and dignitaries.
